For years, the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) has stood as the nation’s largest digital tribute to our brothers and sisters who served. Nearly 10 million veterans are honored on that platform, with stories told by loved ones after they’ve passed.
But now—for the first time ever—you can tell your own story before you go.
The Department of Veterans Affairs just expanded VLM with a powerful new tool called “Your Story, Your Legacy.”And if you’ve already been approved for pre-need burial eligibility in a VA cemetery, you can now privately upload photos, service history, personal milestones, and written reflections directly to your memorial page.
Let that sink in for a second…
You can preserve your legacy your way, while you’re alive to shape it.
Why This Matters to Me—And to Every Veteran
As a combat veteran and legacy planner, I’ve helped countless vets prepare their families for that final bivouac. And here’s what I know: stories matter. Your story matters.
Not just the medals or rank or where you served—but the legacy of your life, your grit, your values, and the lessons you want passed on.
With “Your Story, Your Legacy,” the VA is giving us more than just a platform—it’s giving us back our voice. And when the time comes, your VLM page will go public for your family, friends, and fellow veterans to honor.
How It Works
- Apply for pre-need burial eligibility here: VA Pre-Need Eligibility
- Once approved, you’ll receive an email linking you to the “Your Story, Your Legacy” portal.
- Upload your content privately—photos, autobiographies, historical documents, life milestones, and more.
- When you pass, your profile will be published and live on vlm.cem.va.gov, where others can view and contribute.
All submissions are reviewed by VA moderators for security and respect.
Your Legacy Is Worth More Than a Headstone
This isn’t just about death—it’s about dignity. It’s about owning your narrative and making sure your loved ones have a digital place to visit, reflect, and be reminded of what really mattered.
You stood the watch. Now it’s time to preserve your story.
If you need help understanding your pre-need burial eligibility or want to talk about how to protect your family through proper planning, reach out. I’m here for you.
Stay strong and plan ahead.
