The Wilderness Within: Preparing for the Soul Care Retreat

Finding Solitude: A Christian’s Guide to Reconnecting with God

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the busyness of life, longing for a moment to catch your breath and reconnect with what truly matters? As I prepare to attend the Soul Care Retreat with CBMC Central Midwest this January, I’m reminded of the importance of stepping away from the noise to hear God’s voice. A single verse, Luke 5:16“But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray”—has challenged me to rethink how I prioritize my time with Him.

Jesus’ Wilderness Retreats: A Biblical Perspective

This realization came as I read Luke 5 and reflected on Jesus’ example. The verse is striking in its phrasing: “But Jesus Himself…” Luke didn’t simply say Jesus prayed; he emphasized that JesusHimself—the Son of God, our Lord and Savior—even withdrew. The weight of that phrase—“Himself”—reveals so much about His humility, discipline, and dependence on the Father.

Jesus didn’t just pray; He intentionally slipped away. The deliberate act of stepping into solitude shows how vital it was for Him to commune with God and not be disturbed. And He didn’t just find any quiet spot—He sought the wilderness, a place of simplicity, reflection, and focus. This short sentence carries profound depth, reminding me that if Jesus Himself needed these moments, how much more do I?

Understanding the Wilderness in Biblical Terms

The wilderness holds rich biblical significance. It is a physical and spiritual space where people encounter God, confront their struggles, and experience transformation. The Israelites depended on God for daily provision in the wilderness. For Elijah, it was a place of renewal when he was weary—John the Baptist ministered in the Wilderness, where he baptized Jesus. For Jesus, it was a refuge for prayer and a battleground against temptation. The wilderness represents simplicity, separation from distractions, and an intentional space to connect with God’s purpose.

Lessons from Jesus: Prioritizing Solitude in a Busy World

Amid His ministry, surrounded by people constantly demanding His attention, Jesus prioritized withdrawing and praying. He intentionally sought solitude with the Father, showing that strength and clarity come not from doing more but from being still in God’s presence.

As I meditated on this, I saw how my own life often mirrors the chaos of the crowd—work, family, and daily demands pulling me in every direction. Yet, the lesson was clear: I must start creating my own “wilderness moments” daily. I’ve committed to setting aside 60 minutes every morning to pray, read Scripture, and journal. This sacred time will prepare my heart for my second retreat in the past year and build a daily rhythm of intimacy with God.

Eliminating Distractions to Deepen Your Relationship with God

God has also challenged me to stop making excuses. Too often, distractions like my phone or the urgency of my to-do list steal the time I’ve set aside for Him. I can create the space needed to truly listen and grow by eliminating these distractions. I’ve committed to sustaining this practice for the week and as a lifelong discipline. To keep myself accountable, I’ve shared this goal with a trusted friend who will help ensure I remain consistent.

Preparing Spiritually for the Soul Care Retreat

The timing of this Scripture couldn’t be more perfect as I prepare for my second Soul Care Retreat. This retreat is an incredible opportunity to reset spiritually, stepping away from the busyness to refocus on God’s purpose for my life. The most significant revelation of this journey has been that true strength and clarity come from consistent intimacy with God. Jesus demonstrated that leadership and perseverance are born in moments of prayer and solitude. This isn’t just a good idea; it’s the foundation for everything I’m called to do.
